Each fall (north of the equator), every ACM region worldwide holds a regional programming contest. Each contest provides the mechanism for selecting the top teams in the region, and to identify those teams that will advance to the annual World Finals of The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.  The 27th Annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest Finals will be held March 22-25, 2003 in Hollywood, California at Merv's Beverly Hilton Hotel.

This year the contest is again sponsored by IBM.

The ACM North Central Region includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Western Ontario, Manitoba, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. As it is difficult for some teams to travel to a single site for the contest, the contest is held as a distributed contest hosted by volunteer schools across the region. Teams interested in competing contact the satellite sites at one of the volunteer schools to reserve a slot in the contest.  The regional contest will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2002.

North Central Rules

Volunteering to Host a Satellite Site

Schools interested in hosting a satellite site should contact Stan Wileman, the North Central region's contest director. The requirements for hosting a satellite are as follows.

  • Identify a satellite site director who is willing to be responsible for all site preparation  and the activities at that site.
  • Identify a satellite site "chief judge" who is willing to be responsible for supervising the judging activities at that site.
  • Identify a reasonable number of other support personnel (usually student volunteers).
  • Have available suitable space for teams to work on their solutions.
  • Have available a suitable number of PCs with suitable software.

Team Composition

  • Three students in good standing at their school.
  • Three undergraduates (students who have not yet received a baccalaureate degree), or two undergraduates and a graduate student.
  • All members certified by the faculty sponsor.

Registration

  • Identify the three students who will compete. This is usually done with a local programming contest, but the particular selection mechanism is not prescribed by the regional contest rules.
  • Identify a faculty sponsor who will certify the proper composition of the team.
  • Identify a team advisor who will ideally accompany the team to the satellite site. The team advisor may be the same person as the faculty sponsor.
  • Have the faculty sponsor complete the team registration procedure at the ACM web site.
