Regional Contest Director’s Report on ACM ICPC Asia Region Dhaka
Site Contest 2003
This year Dhaka Site
contest was held on the 13th of November as per schedule for
five hours. Over 163 teams registered online. Many teams could not make
complete online registration due to technical problems. Several
universities from Korea, China, India and other countries made online
registration. Two teams- one from Fudan University and the other from
Jaypee IIT from India participated in the contest. Local universities were
given slots based upon their performance in National Computer Programming
Contest(75 teams) held at SouthEast University, AIPC held at American
International University of Bangladesh(70), and at Daffodil International
University(50), ensuring participation of all universities. A total of 77
teams were accepted for the contest. These teams were challenged by ten
problems, set by well-recognized problem setters from all over the world.
27 teams could be successful in solving problems from SIXTEEN
different universities. This year we did not face any trouble with either
the software or hardware systems. Participating contestants were full of
praise of the contest environment. IBM ACM balloons provided by Debbie
Kilbride significantly raised the attraction. Local newspapers profusely
wrote about the contest and senior
teachers of different universities enjoyed the battle of the brains. Prize
Distribution Ceremony was organized at the university auditorium with the
participation of about a thousand interested people followed by IFTAR and
dinner.
One team solved 6
problems, two teams solved 4 problems each, 5 teams solved 3 problems
each, 7 teams solved 2 problems each and the remaining 12 successful teams
solved one problem each. Number of teams that solved problem A, B, C, D,
E, F, G, H, I, J are respectively 21, 2, 14, 0, 1, 14, 0, 1, 1 and 1.
The brilliant team Powderysnow of Fudan University
became champion solving SIX problems. BUET Phoenix became
runner-up solving 4 problems. Of the top 10 prize-winning teams SEVEN
including one all-female team came from BUET.
BUET’s female team became the best female team by solving TWO
problems, and which happens to be the only successful female team.
BUET’s qualification to world finals every year, since it was introduced
to the event, has always been an inspiring event for students of all
Bangladeshi universities. In 6 attempts twice BUET qualified from the host
site and of the remaining four times twice from Indian site. So far BUET
did not have to look for wild cards. I have a strong feeling that BUET’s
award of a wild card will go a long way to strengthen ACM ICPC activities
in Bangladesh.
