(Still under construction)

A few sites have fully electronic problem submission and judging using systems like PC^2. If so, you can ignore this page.

However, most sites use the classic "sneakernet" system where a problem is submitted on diskette to the site judges, who then judge the submission and return a reply back to the team via a volunteer runner. At these sites the coaches act as the judges. But don't worry, the Regional Chief Judges provide utilities to make judging very easy. Here's what you need to know.

Documents You Must Read. As a judge, you must be intimately familiar with the following documents. The Notes to Judges and Notes to Sites contain specific contact and problem information that is subject to change, so I have provided the 2002 versions as samples.

The Golden Rule! As is clearly stated in the Notes to Teams, a team's output must match the correct output byte-for-byte in order to be counted correct. There have been isolated cases in which judges ignored minor differences in formatting and/or whitespace. This is not acceptable! To maintain the integrity of a multi-site contest all judges must follow the same rules.

Elections. During the coaches' meeting you must do the following.

  1. Elect a Head Judge who will be the final authority on all site judging decisions unless overridden by the Regional Chief Judges or the Regional Director. The Site Coordinator may do this for you.
  2. Elect two other judges as witnesses, who together with the Head Judge will vouch for the accuracy and fairness of the judging.
  3. Elect a judge to be the official timekeeper, whose primary job is to log all submissions.
