CONTEST DIRECTOR'S REPORT
After months of hard work and anticipation, the 5th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest [Asia Region Kanpur Site] was conducted successfully at two places Indian Institute of technology Roorkee and Jadavpur University Kolkata (India). Although this is the fifth time we were hosting the contest in India, being the contest director, I was a little anxious and tense before the event. This is because of the fact that it was a multi-site contest: first time it was organized in India. I am happy to say that the Contest really went off very well. This was largely due to the wonderful teamwork; I got not only the full support and cooperation from IIT Roorkee and Jadavpur University, but also from my institute.
Though we received entries from all corners of the country, and also from neighboring countries like China and Bangladesh, due to unavoidable limitations, we were unable to accept registrations from more than 78 teams this year. Through offline contest we select 60 teams. Finally, 56 teams participated in the Contest. Three teams from Bangladesh participated in the contest at Kolkata. All regions of India (North, South, East and West) were well-represented. Almost all the reputed engineering colleges in India participated in the contest.
As both IIT Roorkee and Jadavpur University were holding this contest first time we all were too tense and excited. Total 35 teams were expected to participate at Roorkee centre from all over India. At IIT Roorkee 34 teams participated in the contest. There were 10 female contestants and 4 female coaches. The teams were from all parts of India. There were 12 teams from North, 10 from South, 3 from East, 4 from West and 6 from central India. At Kolkata centre total 25 teams were expected to participate. At Jadavpur University Kolkata, there were 22 teams in the contest. There were 4 female contestants and 1 female coach. The teams were from all parts. There were 7 teams from South, 11 from East, 3 from West.
Teams started arriving on both the centres from 10th October onwards with a lot of hopes and ideas. The Vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University and the Director, IIT Roorkee inaugurated their own centre contest. To enable contestants to become familiar with the environment, on 11th October we had a practice session, which started at 3:00 PM and continued till 4:00 PM. On 12th October the contest began at 10:00 AM. It was of 5 hours duration. The PC2 software worked well and the contest went off successfully.
Results were declared on 12th October. We are glad to announce that Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India is the Winner of the Contest. Details of the Results are available on our web site http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/users/acm/ There were 23 teams who could solve at least 1 problem and 5 teams could solve 2 problems. By virtue of being the Winner of the Regional Contest held at IIT Kanpur, the team from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is eligible to participate in the World Finals to be held in March 2004.
The Contest provided a platform where our future programmers, professionals, industries and government organizations worked together. It would have been impossible to organize this event without the wonderful support I received from everyone. My grateful thanks to all contestants, coaches, sponsors, ACM contest organizers, the IIT Kanpur administration, department colleagues, my working committees, volunteers, service providers, and the host of people who helped from both within and outside the Institute.
