Frequently Asked Questions

Are contestants allowed to talk to their coaches during contest?

No, definitely not. Once the teams enter the contest area, they are well separated from all other people accompanying the teams (such as advisors, coaches and reserve). Teams may elect for their coaches to serve as interpreters for written clarification requests to the judges. The replies, which are directed to all contestants, are in the contest language.

Is a team composed of students from different universities possible?

No. But, it never hurts to ask.

What is the difference between an advisor and a coach?

ACM Student Chapters have faculty advisors. ACM Programming Contests have coaches. Coaches once were called advisors but this lead to confusion.

Who is that masked man?

I'm not sure, but it is rumored that he is the younger brother of a Texas Ranger who was killed by bushwackers masquerating as American Indians. He befriended a local Waco Indian, Tonto, a man of few words but great courage. Together they roamed the American Wild West righting wrong and rescuing the innocent. The young man wore a black mask, had silver bullets, and rode a white stallion named Silver. The reason for the mask? Perhaps to strike fear in the hearts of bad guys. On the other hand, as a Texan, I can testify that in the early 1900s, wearing a powder blue cowboy outfit would have required wearing a mask in Texas. We call this American Hero the Lone Ranger.
